Privacy Policies

This is the site's privacy policy.
Your privacy is very important to me. I know you value your privacy as much as I value my privacy. So, these policies have been put in place to help assure you that your privacy will be protected.

Information We Collect
The only information that is collected is a working e-mail address and the IP address you are using when you submit your registration. These are only collected if you decide to sign up for a user account here.

How De We Use The Information That Is Collected
The only use of the e-mail address you provide is to send a confirmation e-mail when you sign up for an account and to allow you to reset your password if you lose or forget your password. The site software may also send you automated notices regarding articles you submit regarding their acceptance or rejection or notices regarding software activated actions (like exceeding the posting limit). No other use will be made or is planned to be made of this address. However, the site owner does reserve the right to personally e-mail you if extenuating circumstances arise.

I will not send you other e-mail unless you contact me first and specifically request information or other assistance.

I do not sell the address you provide or link it to other personal information.

In addition to the working e-mail address you provide, you may optionally provide a fake e-mail address that is constructed in such a way so as to prevent automated harvesters from obtaining your e-mail address from the site. You may also provide a web site URL, a PGP key, and a short bio. No use of any of this information will be made by ip-wars.net besides their display with your posted comments and on the user info page.

Finally, after you sign up, you may change your working e-mail address to a fake one. You will lose the ability to reset your password if you choose to do this.

Children's Privacy
The privacy of children is even more important to me. Therefore, I never collect or maintain any information from anyone that I actually know is under the age of 13. Further, I do not think any part of this site has been structured or designed in such a way as to attract anyone under the age of 13.

IP Logs
It is the normal policy of this site to not log IP addresses. Therefore, I do not do anything with IP addresses, like make them available to others or track users via IP addresses. The sole exception to this is to take any steps necessary to stop, prevent, or otherwise investigate violations of the site's acceptable use policy or other policies. Even when I do this, I will endeavor to keep all personally identifiable information private. However, if I have to resort to reporting abuses of the site to ISP's or law enforcement authorities, well, folks will probably find out who you are.

Also note that the site runs on an Apache server that does generate various logs that may contain IP information. My intention is that use of these logs would only be limited to resolving technical issues/problems with the server, reporting general site statistics that do not include any personally identifiable information, pursuant to a proper court order or for the purpose of resolving issues with violators of the site's policies (e.g. crapflooders, spammers, multi-nym users, etc.).

Finally, please be aware that the Scoop software running the site includes various options for tracking, blocking, and displaying IP address information. The Scoop developers included these features to aid in preventing spamming and crapflooding and probably a lot of other potential abuses of a site. They describe it as being paranoid. These features may be activated at any time without notice from the site owner.

If you are really paranoid that someone may find out who you are and you don't want them to, then you probably should not be on the Internet. But since you are (by virtue of reading this), I'm not sitting around trying to find you or figure out how to sell your information for spamming purposes. I'd much rather be working on some article about IP issues, engaging in a good debate, or playing some Yu-Gi-Oh! with my son. But if someone is trying to disrupt the site, I'll do what I can to figure out how to stop them and that may include figuring out who they are.

Questions?
If you have questions or comments regarding the Privacy Policy, please contact me via e-mail to jcausey@ip-wars.net or by posting your question on the site.

Revised May 10, 2005
The previous version of the Privacy Policy is available in pdf format here. A redline version is also available.
