DANGER, DANGER, Don't talk to Strangers!

Groklaw

I submit this piece of satire in light of a comment in the article A Brief History of GrokWar.  And yes, I am the original author.

Who exactly is this stranger in a strange land, PJ of Groklaw?  And why has she so recently been elevated to superstar status amongst the open source crowd?  With the recent launch of the grokline, some Bad Penguins had some nagging questions.  Who is PJ?  Why have we not heard of her before the SCO lawsuit?  Why are there no pictures of her?  Why has nobody in the community actually met her, and lived to tell about it?  What happened to the people who submit critical thoughts of her on groklaw and disappeared afterwords?

We quietly sent our crack team of url divers, domain name scientists, and yahoo board crawlers out on a highly classified secret mission, to find out what the real story is.  We were so astonished by the incredibly nefarious scheme we unearthed that we felt a great urgency to report our findings to the community.

A little background on where our suspicions originated.  First and foremost, PJ's choice of domain names, groklaw.net and grokline.net.  Is there hidden meaning here, a Davinci Code, perhaps?  To "grok" something means to understand it profoundly through intuition or empathy, to truly love something.  What self-respecting open source advocate loves the law?  Isn't the law what got us into the mess with SCO in the first place?  Grokline?  That just does not make any sense.  How can you empathize with a line?  Hmm, line, lion, LYIN.  Bingo.  PJ may be from the south, colloquially speaking, she loves LYING!

Following this convulsive fit of intuition, we realized that PJ was the key to unlocking many mysteries surrounding the SCO lawsuit.  We are convinced that these are just too many coincidences to ignore, we must expose our findings to the community.  We have discovered, GASP, that PJ IS A SPY!  PJ, Groklaw, and Grokline are TOP SECRET OPERATIONS of the SCO INFORMATION MINISTRY!!  We know, this is an unbelievable development.  But it is all true, we will now spell it out for you in the form of a FABAONAQ below.

Frequently Asked but Ambiguously or Not Answered Questions

Q: Where does PJ live?

A: We don't know.  The SCOIM (SCO Information Ministry) masterfully obfuscated the registrant address of grokline.net.  But we are convinced that the recently started company that PJ was hired by is run by none other than the SCOIM (SCO Information Ministry).  The proof?  According to ARIN, osriskmanagement.com's IP Management Department is a mere 36 miles away from Darl McBride's current address.

Q: Who are these mysterious MIT Scientists mentioned by Darl McBride who uncovered code in System V copied into Linux?

A: Open Source Risk Management, formed by venture capitalist Daniel Eggers, runs a VC firm named Eno River Capital.  According to his biographical blurb: "Daniel Egger comes to venture investing with operating experience as an entrepreneur and CEO of his own venture-backed data-mining software company. While still a student at Yale Law School, his study of mathematics led him to patent several data-partitioning algorithms for organizing and searching complex databases."  The actual MIT scientist, we believe, is one of the "Special Limited Partners", Bruce Boehm.  According to his bio: "Mr. Boehm currently is an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has lectured at North Carolina State University in the Technology Commercialization Program. He holds an MS in engineering and an MBA from Stanford University, and a BS in mechanical engineering from MIT."

Q: What about Bruce Perens, he is cool isn't he?

A: Ah, Bruce Perens, an enigma.  We believe Bruce is suffering from an open source business model induced psychotic breakdown.  Researching his history, the poor soul clearly could not reconcile his desires to make money with Open Source.  At one time he hated commercial software so steadfastly that he refused to allow commercial software in debian.  Not too long after that, he gave in to his selfish desires to eat and have a nice car, and took a job at HP.  Obviously this created a schism, which resulted in his termination from HP.  We believe this pushed Bruce over the edge, he fell to the dark side.

Q: Why the sudden launch of grokline.net, what's the hurry?

A: SCO can't come up with any evidence of copied code, they are at a standstill.  If SCO can't dig up any evidence soon, the Judge might just throw out their case.  Grokline.net is a covert operation to dupe open source developers into admitting they had access to the source code of System V code.  It is a subpoena data mine!

There you go, folks.  Please spread the word before it is too late!  Don't let the SCOIM continue to dupe hapless developers by their dastardly deeds!

While I do appreciate your sense of humour, I have some reservations about this article.

1. TinyURL links
I guess this is just me, but I absolutely hate those things.  If I was reading a website that my favourite little sister created, with TinyURL links on it, I would still feel uncomfortable clicking them.  This is partly due to not knowing where they lead, but also because I am only temporarily blessed with a high bandwidth connection.  I would normally have used a telephone line and every click takes forever to actualise.  Seeing where I am heading helps me make a decision on whether I am going to follow a discussion point or not.

2. Timing
While I laughed at parts of this article, I have a concern about where it could lead.  It could be a little close to the bone so recently after the whole Grokwar debacle.  For this site to be seen as an entity in its own right, rather than a ANTI-(enter you gripe here) type of environment, I would recommend that this article be postponed until such a time when more roleplayers in the original Grokwars can laugh about the whole scenario.

I am not going to be as presumptios as to point out which parts were funny and which I felt were leaning a bit more to the malicious side (As I am convinced that any percieved maliciousnous was just that: My Perception.)

I love a good satire... but one always walks such a fine line... my personal opinion is that this one should not be published yet.

But a small part of me would be pretty happy if the people who were actually part of the Grokwars (representatives from both sides would have been ideal, but that is just plain wishful thinking) were to vote otherwise

Well, it made ME snort my milk out my nose and then to read when you actually posted it first, yeah, funny how close to the bone the knife cuts. To butcher a metaphor. So to speak.

It deserves to be spread across the web. I'm not saying you should do that. I'll steal it and do it myself. Not the whole thing, mind you, just a few choice pieces that I'll use without attribution, unless there's retribution. I can always seek absolution after I've been transferred to the institution.

This used to be a spambot post that is flooding the site. Due to volume, I had to resort to this while I work to block access by these bots. My apologies - thanks for your patience.
