The Joys of Parenthood

General News

By JCausey, Section IP-wars.net Site Issues
Posted on Fri Nov 5th, 2004 at 23:26:52 EST

Well, I announced this site Wednesday evening and here it is Friday evening and the thing is still running. I would like to thank everyone that has visited and especially those who have been venturing in to start posting, rating comments, etc., to help us all learn how the system works.

I've never been a regular visitor to Slashdot and this is my first experience with a system that uses ratings. I think, and perhaps you do to, it is a bit disorienting compared to what we are used to. I keep having to conjure up a voice in my head reminding me, "Use the Scoop, Jeff. Use the Scoop."

Anyway, on to business. I would first like to make everyone aware that I have made further revisions to the Operating Instructions (aka FAQ's) page based on the various threads from the past couple days. I invite you to take a look and make further suggestions. Closely related to the changes, you should notice some new descriptors in the drop down box when rating comments. I hope these will help you a little more in deciding what may be appropriate for a rating.

I've also picked up a few requests from the threads. I am working on making an RDF feed FROM this site available. I'll also be working on a way to develop a list of links to other sites that may provide useful information or tools. I'm also looking into a request regarding a calendar being available on the site. As I recall, this was primarily concerned with helping us keep track of dates in the SCO cases, but I can see it being important in other ways going forward. Besides these items, I'm doing my best to respond to inquiries about ratings, mojo, hidden comments, etc.

With all of that said, please be aware that I will be gone for much of the next three days. So, if things seem to get hosed, you think you've been blocked out of the site for some reason, something just doesn't seem right, please don't panic. From my perspective, the site has stabilized quite a bit during the first 48 hours and things appear to be happening as they are supposed to be. Especially the fact that "dispatches" are getting posted to the front page. Remember, it is you the users who will be deciding what the content of the site is.

Finally, I have realized the organization of "Dispatches" is not working real well (nee confusing). So if you want to make suggestions, feel free to do so (on any subject/aspect of the site).

Once again, thanks to everyone for visiting and for your part in helping to build a community!!!

After wading through all the troll posts today, especially in the "OSRM summary for Len Newman" article I think I'd like to see a checkbox in my "Comment Preferences" area to ignore anonymous posters. Is this something that can be done without too much trouble in the Scoop software?

It may not be necessary to ignore Potential Recruit messages in a month or so as the site matures but about 95% of the anonymous posts I've seen so far have been trolls (and generally foul-mouthed trolls at that).

This was implemented a while back in the Geeklog software GL is using and just wondered if Scoop could be set up the same way?

Just to give you a feeling for slashdot:

FIRST POST!

Beyond that, just thanks.  This is fun.  I'll try to write another article next week.  The two I'm thinking about are "Why We Hate SCO" and "DRM, Bring'em Back".  The first explaining that it's (IMO) a little deeper than just that they're scum and trying to steal Linux,  and the second explaining what I feel are some of the consequences of DRM if widely adopted and why I think some of the little discussed consequences are the real intent.

But in writing the very short "Brief History of GrokWar" I rediscovered something I once knew well.  Real writing is hard work!  So I'll try, but I make no promises.

Thanks again!

Great job (4.16 / 6) (#2)

JCausey,

Great job.  As to the dispatches, you might want to up the settings so that it is a little harder to send a story through.  That way we'll get fewer and comment more in depth.

At least until the site gets more users.

As to the general organization.  Is there still the odd hang when trying to vote it into a section?  If we could figure out sections, that might help with the dispatches.

Also, is there a way to limit the lenght of the intro section so we don't get the same problem that ColonelZen had on his post?  We'd have had it even worse with mine because I did the same thing, but some bad editing on html tags meant that I caught it before doing the final submit.

Once again, though, thanks.

Scoop is growing on me.  I am really warming up to the moderation system.  It is a shame that other, ahem, well known sites, didn't utilize a rating system.  It might just have prevented a lot of angst.

I have no problems with the hidden posts.  Once you get trusted (participate) enough, you can see them and unhide them if necessary.  The only people who won't be able to see the hidden posts are basically anonymous visitors.  You can also see who rates posts, which will probably discourage rating tyrants.

On the new labels for the ratings, it seems counter-intuitive to call anything with a positive number "bad".  Can't you set up the "bad" ratings with negative numbers?  Just a nitpick really.

A couple of other minor suggestions.  Is there any way to change the labels on dispatches and log entries?  Perhaps to Articles and Blog Entries?  The terminology seems a little wacky to unfamiliar users such as myself :)

How do sections work?  Will there be a navigation block for the sections?  What about a spellchecker?

It would also be nice if users could rate the dispatches, or at least see the ratings that were assigned by whoever approved the dispatches.  Don't know if that is configurable or is a limitation of the implementation...

In spite of my petty annoyances, I prefer this to the yahoo boards or geeklog.  I like the ability to customize threading views based on number of comments, and the viewing of threads is much better.

CCL Share Alike License? (3.80 / 5) (#34)
by heimdal31 (heimdal31_ip_warsNO@SPAM.threenorth.com) on Tue Nov 9th, 2004 at 15:18:43 EST

The site and the comments are all under CCL Non-Commercial License  I'm just curious what objections there actually are to a CCL Attribution Share-Alike license?

At the very least it seems to me we may want the CCL non-commercial share-alike license.  The current license would seem to allow others to use the material and release it under a different license, so long as it is non-commercial and attribution is preserved.  At the very least, I'd prefer to see a requirement that the license require that any derivative works be re-released under the same terms.

And, honestly, I'd prefer not to see commercial restrictions, so long as the share-alike clause is retained.  Yes, it does allow people to make money off of it, but it also means that I can take the material they release and re-post it as well.

I know the commercial/non-commercial point was briefly covered on CKX, but I do not think the share-alike clause was covered.  If you want to play with CCL license variations, check out the license choice page at the CCL site.

Don't know how difficult it is to make changes to the rating system, but I'd make the following recommendations if not too difficult to implement.

A) Allow one to rate a single post rather than having a "Rate All" button on each.

B) Instead of a 1-5 scoring system, a -1 through 3, or -2 through 2 system would be preferable, where 1 or 0, respectively is "Neutral". The verbal descriptions from lowest to highest are fine though and should remain the same.

Alternately, a similiar result could be reached more easily by setting "3 Neutral" as the default and not messing with the numbers, but I think 0 or 1 as the Neutral setting is more intuitive.

C) Set a default for all posts, such that unrated posts are voted as Neutral when "Rate All" is selected.

This would promote rating posts, as one wouldn't have to select a rating for each and every post, just the ones they wanted to mod up or down.

Of course, it might also moot suggestion A.

My apologies if this has already been discussed elsewhere on the board or at CKX.

When should we start to actively promote ip-wars?

It seems like we could handle a bit more traffic but I don't know that a /.-ing is in order.

Currently LMAO (Logbook related) (3.14 / 7) (#15)
by groendraak (nil mortifi sine lucre) on Sat Nov 6th, 2004 at 16:20:29 EST
(User Info)
While testing the logbook function with really bad humour, the system seems to have rejected me.

It gave me a friendly red message telling me that the section does not exist.

The funny thing (Well... for me anyway) was that I tried to build some spoof into the logbook entry that the system was going to reject my submission based on my boredom/bad grammar factor. That will teach me

Anyway, what is the policy here?  No logbooks? It seems as if the intention was to allow logbooks (from the SOI).  What I was posting was definitely not worthy of Dispatch status.

Thanks for the effort you are putting into this project, would be interesting to see what comes out of it.

Regards

Groendraak

PS:  Not a geek.  Spoof as used in the above paragraph has nothing to do with IP-addresses, proxies, TCP/IP, DNS servers, SCO Lawsuits or PJ's Pajamas.
