Breaking News!

General News

By JCausey, Section IP-wars.net Site Issues
Posted on Fri Oct 21st, 2005 at 14:05:50 EST

I noticed our last Breaking News article has scrolled off the page. Thanks to the Chinese spambots, the recent postings are a bit munged as well, making it hard to find the article.

So, here is a new one. For those not familiar with it, this article can be used to post miscellaneous comments that are connected to a specific article here at IPW. Most folks use it to post links to interesting news stories around the 'net, but you can use it for other stuff too.

Please don't rate anything down because it is OT for this article. Everything is ON topic here.

One year ago, IPW opened for business.  It has been an eventful year of ups and downs.  Thanks to all who have participated.  May there be many more!

Thought I'd share with y'all that I was contacted by Dan Lyons of Forbes.  He is working on an article (more in a sec) and had some questions about how IPW came to be and what it's like around here.

He also had several questions about whether it was an off-shoot of Groklaw, was it setup because I had been exiled from Groklaw (no), etc.  He also asked about CKX - maybe he's been watching the SCOX board the past few days since there's been some traffic over there about CKX?

It will be interesting to see what the final article is like.  My prediction - a piece about GL and how not everyone is happy over there.  Like not everyone being happy about X is news.  He better be careful though - before he knows it, his passion about GL could lead him down the MOG-rose path.

OSRM mutation? (4.00 / 6) (#24)

OSRM seem to have changed their tactics today.  Instead of just spreading FUD about using open-source software, they are now suggesting you should insure yourself against the "risk" that you might steal it!

Is this good news or bad news?

The Department will also examine the policies and specific procedures that address the inspection and removal of the trash compactor from BRCI. ...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 02, 2005

U.S. Marshals Offer Reward for South Carolina Escapees

The United States Marshals Service is seeking any information that would lead to the arrests of Jimmy Causey and Johnny Brewer. Causey and Brewer are believed to have escaped from Broad River Correctional Institution Tuesday morning. The Marshals are offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of either fugitive.

http://www.doc.sc.gov/PublicInformation/MediaInformation/ApprehensionofEscapeesNov2005.htm:

Apprehension of Escapees

On Thursday, November 3, 2005, at approximately 12:30 PM, Inmate Jimmy Causey, SCDC #172046, and Inmate Johnny Brewer, SCDC #258646, were apprehended without incident by SLED agents in the town of Ridgeland, S.C. They previously escaped from Broad River CI on November 1, 2005. They are currently being returned to SCDC custody.

(See also the mug shot and vitals.)

So, who claimed the $5,000 reward? (I assume this was a clever fund-raising event for ip-wars, right?)

Anti-Spyware definitions finalised (3.80 / 5) (#12)

(User Info) http://www.streetdrummers.org/guarana
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/10/28/anti-spyware_defs/

If you treat the "and/or"s as "or"s, then, according the definition, software which is "implemented in ways that impair user control over: material changes that affect their user experience, privacy, or system security; use of their system resources, including what programs are installed on their computers" is spyware.

How does Windows XP, with its DRM technology (including the ability to disable software the user has installed) not meet this definition?

I like the top logo.   The background color is very easy to read, but aesthetically ugh.   Of course asking me about aesthetics is a bit like asking Sargeant Schultz to discuss Plato's ideals in terms of Hegelian synthesis.

Saw this via the Slashdot feed here at the site.  Patent on reviews.  Do you think anyone in the USPTO ever surfs the 'net to know they are making a laughingstock of their office?  Or perhaps it is an insidious attempt to get out of work by getting increasingly ridiculous until finally someone tells them to stop granting business process patents?

Merkey posts to LKML, making trouble again (3.75 / 4) (#53)
by Chris Lingard on Wed Nov 16th, 2005 at 19:23:04 EST
(User Info) http://www.stockwith.co.uk
On Wednesday 16 November 2005 at 23:20:10 GMT the following appeared on LKML:

Someone needs ping Novell about patent  6,728,959 for SMP Strong
Affinity and get it added to the patent commons project at OSDL.  It
will help defeat  any claims brought by that certain Lindon Utah company
owning SMP in Linux.   I noticed Novell has signed up but not placed any
patents into the project.  Just thought I'd remind folks.  Linux uses
strong affinity in much of its architecture.  Having that patent in the
commons will remove any claims that Linux SMP infringes Unix.

Jeff

Some details about this Novell patent are here

Is this the demented rantings of an idiot child?  "Novell will not play with me, so I will tell Mommy"

I probably should ignore it, but I so hate liars.

From one of the OO lists, I ran across a link to this article:

Accountancy firm dumps Microsoft for OpenOffice

Talk about a spin job by the consultant that is quoted throughout the story.  I thought the part about saving $10M in software licenses but having to spend "hundreds" of millions of dollars on other costs was especially funny.

[not news] content filter? (3.33 / 3) (#20)
by JCausey (jcausey@ip-wars.net) on Sun Oct 30th, 2005 at 22:25:08 EST
(User Info) http://www.ip-wars.net
Anyone have any recommendations on content filtering software or a strategy?  My son is getting close to the age when he can easily stumble into things he doesn't need to, so I need to start work on locking down my 'net connection.  And yes - I know the best defense is to monitor his computer activity, which I do, but there are periods (especially when he is at his grandparents, but occassionally here) when he may be unsupervised, so I need a backup (at least until he can figure out how to hack around it) for both here and there.

Any suggestions are welcome!

On some web sites, I include buttons to help people get to applications like OpenOffice, Firefox, or Thunderbird.  Of course, I'm aided in this by the fact that the respective organizations all have marketing pushes that provide the buttons and related links to help drive consumers to the application downloads.

Anybody know of anything similar for Linux in general?  I suppose if I searched around a bit I could find similar buttons for specific distros. I did find a button for LinuxISO.org, but their site seems a bit outdated, so I'm not entirely convinced I would want to send someone there.

Ideas anyone?

I'm not sure why this article showed up in my e-mail so long after it was available, so this may be old news.  Anyway, the article is about the continuing issue of open document implementations in Massachusetts.

Massachusetts Grapples with Open Source's Cost to the Disabled

I thought some of Yates' (general manager of Business Strategy for Microsoft's Information Worker Group) quotes were interesting.

Proprietary can be open
[Proprietary software] relies on the magic of services
Personally, I'd be concerned about using a software product that is built using "magic".  I suppose it might be appropriate for Hogwarts.  Likewise, software built by a company that believes proprietary is open (black is white? up is down?) might be the best choice for Bizarro Superman, but I'm not sure about the rest of us.

Yesterday I completed a survey for InformationWeek that was titled Will Linux Surge in 2006.  Couple interesting questions that were included:
What impact has the SCO Group's lawsuit regarding the alleged illegal use of Unix source code in Linux had on your organization's move to open-source software?
  • We have limited our deployment of open-source software.
  • We have postponed deployment of open-source software.
  • We will not move to open-source software as a result of it.
  • Too soon to tell.
  • No effect
Unfortunately, they didn't give an option of something like "it enhanced our move" (due to increased understanding/knowledge of Linux with the coverage).  I also noted that they give three different options for people to choose with regard to negative impacts (delayed, limited, or outright refusal) and only one option for "no effect".  Likewise, I don't think they meant it this way, but the choice of "Too soon to tell" makes no sense - the organization has had some kind of reaction, so I'm not sure how it can be "too soon to tell" what your own reaction is.  They probably meant something like, "we haven't made a decision yet while we watch the lawsuit" which I would contend is the same as the second choice (delay).
Has your organization asked its Linux software suppliers - or have suppliers volunteered - to indemnify it from potential lawsuits by SCO or other organizations?
  • Yes, we asked for it.
  • Yes, the vendor offered.
  • No
  • Does not apply.
I suppose technically the answer is "no" for those who do not believe such indemnification even makes sense.

I'll be interested to see how the results are presented and any spin.
