More Cutting Edge Innovation from Microsoft

Microsoft

Received my latest e-mail from eWEEK's eNews and Views mailing list a little while ago. While the top story(Rivals Wait To Serve BlackBerry Customers) involved RIM's competitors waiting to step in to the potential void (I've been waiting and waiting to scoop up a Palm TREO myself but Verizon just won't come off the price, although for the time I had a Blackberry it was very nice), and the third top story was about a hacker who has figured out how to use an IE design flaw to crack Google's Desktop (IE Design Flaw Lets Hacker Crack Google Desktop), I was immediately drawn to the news (Microsoft Touts Vista's Restart Manager Feature) that Microsoft is working on a new "feature". And what could that feature be? Why, it is none other than changing things so Windows or applications can update without having to reboot. WOWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!

A couple posters in the talkback section have already experienced the same reaction I did. As they note, this is only new in the sense that Microsoft is finally implementing something in Windows that many other operating systems have been able to do for a long time. Likewise, some might even consider it a bug fix instead of a feature.

This does make me wonder if the virus, malware, and spyware makers will take advantage of this wonderful new feature?

The article indicates Jim Allchin's position as:

There would be an option in both Microsoft Update and Windows Update where users would be able to "select and say 'I want everything from Microsoft. Give me the best that you have, keep me updated to the best you have, not just for security fixes, but for everything.'
Apparently he is under the impression that this would be a lot of rebooting, which is why a new system is needed. I wonder why that would introduce such a need for reboots? Does Microsoft produce that many updates in their products? Hmm...I suppose fixes, patches, etc. - yeah, I guess so. Perhaps the bigger question is will this do away with "Patch Tuesday"?

Some of the more interesting comments I thought came from Anthony Risicato, who indicated:

if computers operated like phones or refrigerators or televisions, then users could spend all of their time using the device rather than working on it.
If? if? Luckily for me, my computer does operate like a phone or refrigerator (lol, actually better than my crappy cell phone). That is probably because I'm running Linux and everything just works. Does it occasionally need updates? Sure. But when I do one, I don't have to go through a bunch of rebooting or anything. Linux just installs it and I continue on my merry way (actually, it is more like I continue working on something else while the update is occurring). Likewise, I frequently install new software just because I like to tinker. The other day I was working on getting VLC installed on my laptop. Not the easiest thing since there is no rpm for SuSE, so I had to resolve a lot of dependencies on my own. After much work though, I got it installed and working without a single reboot. Meanwhile, I had the need recently to view a Windows Journal application file, which requires a viewer. Of course, that little, rinky-dink application produced a reboot of the Windows machine I was using.

Risicato also quips that people are excited when their computer doesn't crash for a month or two. I just found that humorous. I know Linux can crash, but it has not even been an issue for me. I don't even remember the last time I had a crash between three PC's I have running Linux. Meanwhile, my wife complains that every time my son plays a game on the Windows PC, she can tell, because things are hosed and she has to reboot when she gets back on it.

So there you have it - another in a long line of "innovations" from Microsoft coming soon to a computer near you.

Thanks for reading,
Jeff

Reminds me of this old Apple advertisement (posted on digg.com a week or so ago). Apple ads are hilarious.

hmm thats great news to hear. Microsoft is striving hard to maintain its supremacy. From the recent years, its innovations are really awesome. I am hoping that Microsoft will remain the same, as competition is really tough. I would love to use the Microsoft recent cutting-edge innovations. My all hats off to Microsoft Company. I wish Microsoft will make some innovations alike in the future also.

Mr Gates is illiterate. (none / 2) (#1)

He cannot read Linux file systems, not to mention odf etc.

I put a dvdram blank into my shiny new dvd-burner, typed
"mkfs /dev/hdc
" into a terminal window, and now* have a four-gigabyte read/write removeable fsck-able storage disc.  [Like a floppy but bigger and stiffer?  Must be the answer to every maiden's prayer.]

But none of my friends and relations can read it, so I tried
"mkfs -t vfat /dev/hdc
" instead.  No joy, just error messages!

Of course this problem is mainly Sir William's fault, but I can't help feeling that RMS has also let me down a bit.  Can anybody suggest a simple workaround?

*BTW I did have to reboot, to get fstab updated.
