Linux Use Survey

General News

By JCausey, Section General Articles

Back in December I noted that I had participated in a survey being conducted by InformationWeek (see this post) on Linux. Well, I just got my latest issue and the results of the survey are in the article Linux's Life Beyond Servers.

Some of the tidbits include the finding that 35% of those surveyed indicated they are already using open source software on desktop PC's. I'm guessing this is probably being driven mostly by Firefox, OpenOffice, The Gimp, and potentially Thunderbird. I'm trying to think about what other F/OSS projects are ported over to Windows that are probably being adopted heavily.

However, I guess I was in a minority of only 12% of the respondents whose PC's are running or will run Linux. Interestingly, they note a Gartner study that found only 1.5% of PC's worldwide are running Linux. I have to conclude that either the "business-technology professionals" that were part of the survey population are way ahead in terms of Linux adoption or Gartner's study has missed the boat. jmo, but I find it hard to believe Linux only has 1.5% worldwide - U.S. maybe I can believe that, but not worldwide.

Finally, I noted that fully two-thirds reported the SCO lawsuits are not impacting their decisions regarding deployment of F/OSS and only 9% have delayed anything thanks to SCO.

They also had another article about Linux security (Is Linux Next?) that I found rather underwhelming. Bottom line - all operating systems contain vulnerabilities. Nothing new there. They noted that in the survey they conducted, only 10% found security to be a "challenge" when deploying Linux.

At the end, the author writes:

They'll continue to struggle with the imperfect software and the knowledge that the cost of imperfection can be quite high.
Shouldn't that be included in an article about Microsoft software?

Thanks for reading,
Jeff

I suppose there was some measure of self selection in the surveys but I'm surprised the desktop adoption/trial rate was so high. (AIR 35% said some desktops deployed and another 18% claiming to have plans for a trial).   Of course they did cite in the article that it was most likely just a few techies running it on their own desktops in many instances.

Taking into account this (what I consider obvious) self selection, I think the other reported numbers are pretty reasonable.

Gartner's number (1.5%) is IMO bought and paid for, and like other things thus just a sleezy memory the day after.

Bye bye spambot (none / 0) (#7)

This used to be a spambot post that is flooding the site. Due to volume, I had to resort to this while I work to block access by these bots. My apologies - thanks for your patience.
