A couple days ago I was in the process of trying to install Cinellera. One of my latest itches has been to grab video off our video camera so I can turn them into DVD's. Interestingly enough, our JVC camera supplied a USB cable - alas, it appears from my searching that Linux does not support video capture via USB. So, I installed a Firewire card. And btw, when I restarted the computer after the install, my copy of SuSE 9.3 had no problem detecting/installing the driver (actually, I didn't even know if it had, but obviously it worked as I was able to grab video). I used Kino to grab the video and did some very brief editing just to see if things were working properly. And yes, they were. However, unless I'm missing something, Cinellera is way over my head to be useful and Kino is limited in what edits it can do. But I haven't really searched real in depth yet. Anyway, I can grab video from the camera now, export it as mpeg's, then use dvdauthor to create the files to burn onto a DVD. So that's a good start.

I'm trying to get some simple tech support help from RoadRunner today and what do I run into? New chat software that they have implemented. And guess what? It won't work with Linux. Below is some information I gleaned from their web site about why this may be:

This is really OT, but I just thought it was so funny, I had to post it somewhere! Every know and then, I get these Nigerian scam letters that sneak through to my mailbox. In most cases, they are like this one in that Roadrunner has tagged it as spam or potentially virus bearing. Why they send me an e-mail to tell me that with the rest of the message is beyond me - just send it on to the junk heap, quarantine, whatever it is the RR servers do. But, back to the scam mail. Of course, everyone knows these things get recycled by different scammers with different "details". This one is a hoot though as it appears I have won the "MICROSOFT LOTTERY". Sorry to say, but I lost that lottery. Fortunately, I found Linux and whole host of other F/OSS and moved out of the loser's bracket (no comments from the peanut gallery please!).

As I'm sure many of our site visitors and members noticed, earlier today we had a Diary entry posted here by one of our members that I considered vulgar and offensive (the Diary entry that is). Based on the few comments that were posted, so did several of our registered members.
When I ran across it, I felt I needed to take some action to tone it down a bit, especially with regard to the personal nature of the statements that were being made. I was recently reading through my latest issue of Popular Government, a publication of the School of Government at UNC-Chapel Hill. I ran across an article by Margaret Henderson, Evolution of a Nonprofit, Part 1: Determining the Organization's Orientation(pg. 16-21, Fall 2004). In it, I found some very interesting material comparing different types of organizations and leadership style. I thought I might just share a little bit of it to perhaps shed a little different light as folks look back at the history and development of the various open source groups. Plus, I find organizational development issues to be very interesting!

Our faithful readers (or perhaps folks from CKX) may recall a couple weeks back when I was taken to task over some of the work I've done in the past that involved M$ products. During the course of that fun episode, some of you may have run across my business'es web site and if you did, you may have noticed a small entry about me volunteering with the Junior Achievement program. Well, today was the final today of meeting with the high school class as they start their final exams for the fall semester tomorrow. And although the "company" still has some work to do, we basically wrapped things up today.
So, it was a time for some reflection and feedback on how things went. One of the most interesting comments (perhaps because I think it relates back to some of the issues we discuss here), was from one class member who noted that they had a problem with some people not listening to others who were speaking up with a different opinion on a subject. So we had a short discussion about how important it is for decision makers (that could be any of us depending on the situation) to make sure to get and consider input from as many people as necessary. One thing that popped into my head - you know you can think a lot faster that what it takes to listen to someone talk - was how important it is to make sure everyone who wants to have input gets a chance if you are ever going to get to the point of getting that input to review/consider it. Maybe I'm just spending too much time reading meta-discussions about open communication, but I just thought, "how interesting" in relation to all that goes on here and other sites.
